Gogol is one of my favorite authors to whom I return through all my life and theater career.  Yet in middle school I couldn’t wait - for no special reason - when we’re going to start reading and studying Gogol.  It is my 6th approach to his texts on stage.  This time - on stage of the Slovak National Theater in Bratislava adapting and directing “How Ivan Ivanovich quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich”.

Of course, it’s a reaction to war!  To this crazy, stupid, terrible and incomprehensible war, which is brutally devouring our time, life and place!  But we want it to be an artistic reaction, different from our hatred and pain, opposite to our depression and fear.  We want it to be smart, bright and funny!

And still it’s our dialog with Evil and our faith in Truth!
